Memorial Day Ceremony Details

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Annual Memorial Day Celebration at the Texas State Cemetery on Monday
The Texas State Cemetery will host an annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m. The Patrick Henry Chapter of the Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution and the Thankful Hubbard Chapter of the Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution are the sponsoring groups. The ceremony will take place on Republic Hill in the southwest portion of the Cemetery and admission is free. Parking will be available on Navasota Street, with gate access to the ceremony area. Parking inside Cemetery grounds will not be available to the public.
Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Alanna Cook will be the featured speaker. Colonel Cook was deployed four times in support of the Global War on Terror between 2002 and 2010. Colonel Cook retired in January 2014 as the Division West, First Army Assistant Chief of Staff, Logistics, Fort Hood, Texas.
Festivities will begin at about 9:30 a.m. with the Austin Symphonic MicroBand playing patriotic music. The ceremony itself will begin at 10 a.m. and will honor two American Revolutionary War veterans who are buried at the Texas State Cemetery. Robert Rankin and Stephen Williams fought in the American Revolution and then became founding fathers of the Republic of Texas. There will be a brief celebration of each of their lives.
Toward the end of the ceremony, re-enactors will fire a memorial salute followed by Rankin and Williams descendants placing flowers on their graves.
Seating will be limited, so the public is encouraged to bring chairs. In the event of adverse weather, the ceremony will be moved inside the Cemetery gallery. Parking is available in front of the Cemetery administration building and on Navasota Street.
