PIERCE, GEORGE WASHINGTON (1843 ~ 1917). George Washington Pierce, Confederate veteran, was born in Hall County, Georgia in 1843.

Pierce enlisted in Confederate Army in May of 1864 in Company D of Kellogg's Battalion, also known as the 43rd Georgia Volunteer Infantry.

In early 1865, the 43rd, along with the 40th and 41st regiments, were consolidated to form the 40th Battalion Georgia Infantry. Pierce served as a private in Company C. The 40th surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865.

After the War, it is difficult to pinpoint Pierce and his location and activities, except that he moved to Texas in 1889. By the early 1900s, he was living in Appleby, Nacogdoches County, and was working as a farmer. While there, in 1915, he successfully applied for a Confederate Pension from the State of Texas. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Burnet, Texas, but only stayed a short time, as he moved to Austin to live in the Confederate Men's Home on June 5, 1916.

Pierce lived in the Home for only eight months before he died on February 13, 1917. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.

According to his entry in the Confederate Home Roster, Pierce was a widower and wished that his brother, H. P. Pierce, in Gainesville, Georgia, be notified of his death.
