JONES, JOHN GRANT (1922 ~ 2013). The following is an obituary for John Grant Jones, former Texas Senator and member of the Texas House of Representatives. The obituary was provided by Scanio-Harper Funeral Home.

Memorial services for former State Senator Grant Jones, 90, of Temple will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene with Rev. Felicia Hopkins officiating. Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Texas State Cemetery in Austin with Lt. Governor Bill Hobby, Rev. John Wright and Harry Bradley officiating. A reception will follow from 12 noon to 2:00 P.M. at the State Capitol Senate Reception Room.

Mr. Jones died Saturday in a Temple Hospital.

Mr. Jones was born in Abilene November 11, 1922 to Morgan C. Jones and Jesse Wilder Jones. He graduated from Abilene High School, went to Southern Methodist University and then to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree from the Wharton School of Finance. He served, during World War II, in the Army Air Corps. He married Elizabeth Anne Smith August 21, 1948. She preceded him in death April 25, 2011. He entered the Insurance business and served as President of the State Board of Insurance Agents. He also became an attorney in 1975. He served in the House of Representatives for eight years from 1965 to 1972, where he served as chairman of the Claims and Urban Affairs Committee and the State Senate for sixteen years, from 1973 to 1988 where he became Senate finance chairman. He also served as Governor For A Day. Senator Jones was twice named by Texas Monthly as one of the state’s 10 best legislators. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene. He moved to Temple fifteen years ago.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren Melia Caitlyn Jones, Jonathan Jones Pliego and Morgan Jones Pliego, Senator Max Sherman, Senator Don Adams, Senator Ray Farabee, Representative Hilary Doran, Representative Bill Finch and Representative Rayford Price.

Survivors include his son Morgan A. Jones of The Caribbean, one daughter Janet Jones Pliego, M.D. of Round Rock and three grandchildren Melia Caitlyn Jones of College Station, Jonathan Jones Pliego of Round Rock and Morgan Jones Pliego of Round Rock.
