ARGO, SARAH JANE CARTER (1835 ~ 1919)
The following biographical research was provided by Steve Collins (family descendant).
Sarah Jane Carter (Morgan) Argo was born in Georgia in April, 1835, to Thomas Carter II and Henrietta Link, both of South Carolina. She married James Milton Morgan (1833-1866), also of Georgia, on December 17, 1851, in Coosa County, Alabama, and they had six children.
Following James Milton Morgan’s death in 1866, Sarah married Henry Dallas Argo in Coosa County, Alabama, on August 27, 1867. (The name “Dalor” Argo, inscribed on her headstone, is likely a bad transcription of “Dallas” from her records at the Confederate Women’s Home.)
Henry Dallas Argo (1844-1930) was a veteran of Company I of the 8th Confederate Cavalry (Wade’s), the same unit in which Sarah’s brother James Oliver Carter served. (James Oliver Carter is buried with a confederate headstone in Old Hall Cemetery, Lewisville, TX.)
The family moved to Texas in 1869 and resided in the Comanche County area before moving to Arkansas around 1877. Sarah and Henry had five children, four of whom were born in Texas.
Of her children with James Milton Morgan, four settled in Texas and are buried in Texas. Franklin Pierce Morgan (1854 – 1929) is buried in Victoria, Texas; James Thomas Morgan (1856 – 1935) is buried in Arlington, Texas; John William Morgan (1859 – 1946) is buried in Stanton, Texas; and Eugene Hilliard Morgan, M.D. (1866 – 1931) is buried in Granbury, Texas.
The 1910 U.S. Census lists Sarah as widowed and living in Hollis, Oklahoma, with her son Alford Dick Argo. She entered the Confederate Women’s Home in Austin, Texas, about 1915, where she resided until her death in 1919. On April 30, 1919 she died and was later buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
