ANTHONY, GEORGE L. (1840~1918) George L. Anthony was born in Texas, August 9, 1840. He was a private in Company B, of the 2nd Louisiana Infantry, Stafford‘s Brigade, McLain‘s Division. The 2nd Infantry regiment was also called the Louisiana Zouaves. It fought with the Army of North Virginia from the Seven Days 45 Battles to Cold Harbor, and was active around Appomattox. During Chancellorsville and Gettysburg a large percentage of the company were killed and wounded. In 1862, the company started with 782 men, and at the end of the war only three officers, and 41 men were still active, George L. Anthony was one of them.
After the war, George Anthony returned to Texas where he was a merchant. We know that he lived in Gainesville and was a widower before he entered the Confederate Men‘s Home December 17, 1918. It is uncertain how many children he had, if any. He listed a William H. Daugherty and Frank Morris, Sr., both of Gainesville, Texas as people he wished to notify upon his death. He also listed a Mrs. H.R. Anthony in Bonham, Texas, their relationship is unknown. He listed his religious preference as Episcopal. George Anthony died February 15, 1921 and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the same day.
