BERRYMAN, WILLIAM (1839-1922) ~ William Berryman, native Texan and Confederate Veteran, was born in 1839, in Grimes County. At the age of 22, on October 20, 1861, William mustered into Company A of the 10th Texas Infantry.
This regiment, also known as Nelson‘s regiment, organized in October of 1861, with eight companies. Most of the members of this regiment were captured at Arkansas Post, Arkansas on January 11, 1863. However, by this time, William was left in Grimes County on sick furlough. During the time of his furlough he married Mariah Steele on March 24, 1863. There is no evidence that he ever returned back to military service for his Compiled Military Service Record states that he was absent without leave; however, his Compiled Military Service Record states that he also may have served in the 17th Consolidated Texas Dismounted Cavalry. No evidence or documents as of yet, have come forth to prove William‘s service or desertion in the 17th Consolidated Texas Dismounted Cavalry and so his Civil War records are deemed incomplete.
Between the years of 1870-1900, there is no record of William and Mariah‘s whereabouts, but it is assumed they remained in Grimes County where William worked as a farmer. The next record of William living in Grimes County is the 1910 Census where he was widowed and living with William G. Schumacher. Nine years later on December 17, 1919, William was admitted to the Confederate Men‘s Home in Travis County, Austin, Texas and there he passed away on November 16, 1922, at the age of 83.
