HITT, RANDAL R.(1838~1924). Randal R. Hitt, Confederate veteran, was born in Georgia in 1838. On September 22, 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Blount Springs, Alabama. He was mustered into Company B of the 4th Battalion Alabama Volunteers, which later became Company B of the 29th Alabama Infantry. The 4th Battalion was organized in the fall of 1861 in Montgomery.
The 29th Infantry spent most of its time along the Alabama coast line, until it joined the Army of Tennessee. Once with the Tennessee, they took part in the Atlanta-Dalton campaign and the Battles of Resaca, New Hope, Peach-tree Creek, and Atlanta. After moving into Tennessee with John Bell Hood, the 29th took part in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. After that, they moved into the Carolinas and took part in Kinston and Bentonville, and surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina.
In 1880, Hitt moved to Texas and eventually settled in Mansfield, where he was a farmer. After breaking his hip, he moved to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin on June 21, 1910.
Hitt lived in the Home for ten years until he was adjudged insane and moved to the Austin Lunatic Asylum, now called the Austin State Hospital, on September 30, 1920.
It seems that Hitt returned to the Confederate Home and passed away on May 7, 1924. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
Hitt's wife, whose name is not known, died before he entered the Home. The only known family was a brother, A. T. Hitt, who also lived in Mansfield.
