ROWAN, JAMES (1835~1926) James Rowan, Confederate veteran, was born on August 2, 1835, in DeKalb County, Alabama. After moving to Mississippi, he enlisted in the Confederate Army in March of 1862, and was mustered into Company B of the 32nd Mississippi Infantry. The 32nd was assembled at Lula, but the men were mustered into service in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The majority of the men were from Tishomingo, Lee, Prentiss, and Alcorn counties.

After its organization, the men of the 32nd were assigned to General S. A. M. Wood's and Lowrey's Brigade and fought with the Army of Tennessee. Rowan's unit fought at the battles of Chickamauga, Atlanta and others. They also fought with General John Bell Hood and saw action in North Carolina, where they were surrendered by General Joseph E. Johnston.

In 1885 Rowan moved to Texas and settled in Snyder, Scurry County, in 1906 where he worked as a farmer. Following his wife's (name unknown) death and suffering from old age, he applied for entry to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin. He moved into the Home on December 31, 1918.

Rowan left the Home at his own request on April 29, 1920, but returned prior to his death on May 27, 1926. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the same day.

When he entered the Confederate Home, he listed two correspondents, Mrs. Georgia Mackclinton of Snyder and Mrs. J. P. Metcalf of Paris. Both of whom may have been his daughters.
