L. M. Mays

MAYS, L.M. (1843 ~ 1929). L.M. Mays was born in Arkansas in 1843. Mays served in the 33rd Texas Cavalry under Colonel James Duff and he was in Company C, under Captain John Robinson. The 33rd Texas Cavalry was organized by the increase of the 14th Cavalry Battalion to a regiment in early 1863. General E. K. Smith, commanding Trans-Mississippi Department, surrendered on May 26, 1865 to the Union forces.

While many Texans and their regiments were being sent to other parts of the South to fight, one of the many regiments to stay behind and protect Texas ports on the Gulf of Mexico and garrisons along the Rio Grande River was the 33rd Texas Cavalry. They protected these key Confederate outposts, which would facilitate trade and would purchase arms and munitions. The 33rd Texas Cavalry were involved in several engagements during the Civil War, including Port Isabel, Harrisonburg, and Palmetto Ranch.

Following the War, Mays worked as a farmer. He was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home on June 3, 1929. L. M. Mays died on October 8, 1929 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery on October 9, 1929.
