ADAMS, WILLIAM MONROE (1844-1934) William Monroe Adams, Confederate veteran, was born in Marion County, Illinois, on May 4, 1844, to William and Susanna England Adams.  According to the 1860 Census, William Monroe Adams was living in Guadalupe County at the age of 16.  (Please note:  according to the Confederate Home Roster, Adams came to Texas in 1886.  This is an error.)

At the outbreak of the War, both Adams and his father enlisted in the Confederate Army. They were initially assigned to the 8th Texas Infantry, but eventually fought with the 29th Brigade and were part of the forces that defended Corpus Christi in 1862.

During the war, Adams met Laura Baylor Woodward, daughter of Green F. and Adaline Collier Woodward, in Sutherland Springs. Adams married Miss Woodward on June 13, 1866. They continued to live in Sutherland Springs and had 12 children. Laura died in 1892, during childbirth. Adams later married Susan Baker in 1901, and lived in Wilson and Karnes Counties. In 1906, after returning to Guadalupe County, Adams received a Confederate pension from the State of Texas.

On March 4, 1922, Adams moved into the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, where he died on September 25, 1934. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
