BARR, GEORGE W. (1846 ~ 1934). Confederate veteran George W. Barr was born in Calhoun County, Mississippi on March 18, 1846 to Allen Barr and Jane Campbell Barr.
Barr enlisted in the Confederate Army in April of 1863 and served as a private. He was part of the 19th Mississippi Cavalry, Rucker's Brigade, Forrest's Division. No military records concerning Barr have been located, but he could have served at the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, and the Battle of Cold Harbor. It is fairly certain he participated in the Battle of Brice's Crossroads in June of 1864 and was wounded there in both legs. He surrendered with his Company May 10, 1865 at Gainesville, Alabama.
Barr moved to Texas in 1867. At the time of his Confederate Pension Application in December of 1913, he had lived in Jones County for 12 years. It is uncertain where he lived prior to that.
Barr married at some point and had a daughter, Hattie, who was listed as his only correspondent when he entered the Texas Confederate Home on April 9, 1930. He was a widower when he entered the Home.
Prior to moving to Austin, Barr lived in Sweetwater, Texas. He listed his religious preference on the Home Roster as Church of Christ. He died August 23, 1934 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
