GILLIAM, JOHN WILLIAM (1844~1935) John William Gilliam, Confederate veteran, was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia on April 17, 1844, to John W. and Mary E. (Goodwyn) Gilliam.
On September 2, 1861, Gilliam, at age 18, while still living in Dinwiddie County, enlisted in Captain Epes' Company of (Johnston's) Virginia Heavy Artillery. He stayed with his regiment throughout the war and was listed as absent from August 31 to December 31, 1864. His record shows him as sick, but does not detail the nature of his illness.
At the close of the War, Gilliam, who attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, was paroled at Appomattox on April 9, 1865, and took the Amnesty Oath in Richmond, Virginia on May 11, 1865. Shortly thereafter, on February 14, 1871, Gilliam moved to Texas and settled in Harris County, where he worked as a farmer/dairyman.
Having never married, Gilliam moved into the Confederate Men's Home in Austin on March 18, 1921. After living in the Home for nearly 14 years, he passed away on February 14, 1935, and was buried that same day in the Texas State Cemetery.
As stated above, Gilliam never married, but listed Miss Mary Anna Neblett and Mr. J. P. Gilliam as contacts when he moved into the Confederate Home. Both lived in Virginia, Petersburg and Church Road, respectively. Other than their names and addresses, no other information was given concerning their relation to Gilliam.
