TOWNSEND, PARTHENIA JANE TEAGUE (1847~1944) Parthenia Jane Teague Townsend was born in Union County, Arkansas on January 17, 1847. She was the only child of Nancy Andrews Cox and Harrison Teague. The family moved to Texas when she was two and settled around Bastrop County.

She married Confederate veteran Bethel Durant Townsend, of Colorado County, Texas on April 15, 1867. He was born in 1848 in Columbus, Colorado County to Moses and Nancy Caldwell Townsend.

He served in the Confederate Army from June 27, 1863, until July 22, 1865 in Company H of the 36th Texas Cavalry.

The Townsends had two children, Benjamin George and Nancy. Bethel Townsend died in Robertson County, Texas on February 6, 1880, after drinking homemade whiskey. Parthenia Townsend applied for a Confederate widow's pension on January 12, 1933, in Bexar County, Texas. She was eighty-four years old and had lived for twelve years in San Antonio with her daughter.

When she was ninety, Townsend applied for admission to the Confederate Woman's Home in Austin and was admitted on July 13, 1938. She lived through the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Spanish-American War, World War I and part of World War II.

Townsend died August 15, 1944, at the Home and outlived both of her children. She was buried at the Texas State Cemetery two days later.
