GOSSETT, LEO E. (1925 ~ 2006). The following is an obituary for Leo E. Gossett, former Texas Ranger. The obituary was published in the Austin American-Statesman on September 12, 2006.

"Leo E. Gossett, 80, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal servant to the State of Texas, peacefully passed away on September 10, 2006 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Pearsall, Texas, and had been an Austin resident since 1968. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Carmen Gossett; sons, Richard, Larry, and Gary; daughter, Janet Childers; son-in-law, Randall Childers; daughters-in-law, Kathy Gossett and Julie Gossett; grandchildren, Jennifer, Alisse, Shannon, Jake, Evan, and Amanda; and great-grandson, Dylan. He was predeceased by his son, Patrick.

He retired in 1988 as Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, serving for more than 39 years with that agency. He served in leadership positions of several law enforcement organizations at both state and national levels. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Employee Retirement System and was active in local civic affairs; serving on the board of the Salvation Army and Campaign Chair of the United Way, Capitol Area, and advisory board of Boy Scouts of America. He was also a longtime member of downtown Rotary Club. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps., and attended the University of Texas, and Southwestern University in Georgetown. He was a devoted member of Hyde Park Baptist Church.

Family visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Hyde Park Baptist Church with Dr. Buckner Fanning officiating. Internment will follow at the Texas State Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the Texas DPS Historical Museum Fund, P.O. Box 141603, Austin, Texas 78714-1603.
