August W. Cramer

CRAMER, AUGUST W. (1832 ~ 1903). August W. Cramer, Confederate veteran, was born in Switzerland, circa 1832 or 1837. After immigrating to the United States he eventually settled in Texas by 1855.

When the Civil War broke out, Cramer appears to have been living in Virginia, as he enlisted in the Confederate Army on October 9, 1862, in Richmond. He was mustered into the 11th Virginia Infantry. The 11th Infantry was organized for State service in May of 1861 and was mustered into Confederate service on July 1, 1861. Most of the soldiers enlisted for only one year. At the end of that year, the regiment was reorganized in April of 1862. Cramer appears in several different companies in the regiment, including A, C, F, of which he was a sergeant, and H. After the War, he returned to Texas and settled in San Antonio, where he was a laborer and candy maker.

An unmarried Lutheran, Cramer moved to Austin on February 20, 1897 to live in the Confederate Men's Home. He died on July 1, 1903 and was later buried in the Texas State Cemetery.

Having no children, Cramer listed a Sophie Cramer, of Basil, Switzerland, (most likely a relative) as his only contact while living in the Home.
