SWAIN, MARSHALL S. (1870 ~ 1906). The following biography for Marshall S. "Mark" Swain was provided by a Swain descendent.
"Marshall S. 'Mark' Swain, Colonel of the Texas Volunteer Guard and veteran of the Spanish-American War, was born in Clarksville, Texas on November 17, 1870, to Colonel William Jess Swain, Confederate veteran, legislator, and State Comptroller, and Mary Frances Bohannan.
Circa 1888 or 1889, Swain married the former Lucy Sims of Clarksville and had a daughter, Lucy Sims Swain. After the birth of their daughter, Lucy, his wife, did not survive and died two weeks later on November 11, 1890, and was buried in Clarksville. Swain later remarried, but his second wife's name is not known.
Thought to be one of the best military men in Texas, Swain served as Colonel of the Sixth Infantry of the Texas Volunteer Guard before the reorganization of the Texas National Guard, and was a captain of a company in Hood's Immunes during the Spanish-American War.
It sounds as if Swain was suffering from a respiratory illness, because he spent a month in Phoenix, Arizona for his health, but, on his return to Dallas, was admitted to the Briggs Sanitarium.
He died at the Sanitarium on May 16, 1906, at age 37. His body was sent to Austin, where he was buried in the Texas State Cemetery next to his father."
