SHERMAN, GENE ALICE WIENBROER (1938 ~ ). The following is a brief biographical sketch of Gene Alice Wienbroer Sherman, spouse of former Senator Max Sherman. The biography was provided by the Sherman family.

"Gene Alice Wienbroer Sherman was born February 7, 1938. Upon graduation from high school, Mrs. Sherman attended Baylor University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English. She also received a Master of Arts in English and Education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Mrs. Sherman served as director of the Thompson Conference Center at the University of Texas at Austin from 1987 to 1996. Prior to that time, she was on the faculty of the Department of English at Amarillo College and at West Texas State University, Director of the Women's Program at Amarillo College, and Director of Special Projects for the Division of Continuing Education at the University of Texas at Austin.

In 1988 she helped develop the Legal Assistant Certificate Program. Along with her other supervisory roles at the Thompson Conference Center, Mrs. Sherman served as director of the Legal Assistant Program.

Mrs. Sherman has had extensive volunteer experience in social services, arts, and humanities. She has served on the Texas Committee for the Humanities, a regent agency for the National Endowment for the Humanities; the Board of Child and Family Service, Inc.; the Session of University Presbyterian Church; and the Executive Committee of the Docents of the Governor's Mansion. She is a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of Austin; an Associate Member of the Settlement Club, which operates a home for troubled children; and a member of the Senate Ladies Club of Texas.

She is an alumnus of Leadership Austin's Class of 1984 and the Governor's Executive Development Program, Class IX. Her professional memberships include the National University Continuing Education Association and the Texas Association of Community Service and Continuing Education."
