DUNNING, SAMUEL WASHINGTON (1833 ~ 1909). Samuel Dunning was born in Tennessee in 1833. During the Civil War he served in Company I, 1st Arkansas Infantry, Hawthorne's Brigade, Churchill's division. This regiment was also known as 37th Arkansas Infantry. Dunning was captured at Helena, Arkansas on July 4, 1863 and was imprisoned at Alton, Illinois on July 9, 1863. He was transferred to Rock Island, Illinois on December 7, 1864, and was transferred to the commanding general, West Division of the Mississippi, for exchange on January 17, 1865.
Dunning moved to Texas in 1866, and lived in Caldwell County. He was a married farmer when he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home. He was admitted twice. The first time he was admitted was on January 1, 1892 and he was released on June 12, 1892. He was readmitted on December 26, 1899 where he died May 20, 1909. |
