HERNDON, F. M. (1840~1909). F.M. Herndon was born in 1840 in Missouri. During the Civil War he served in Company F, 3rd Texas Cavalry, Ross' Brigade under Forrest's Division. The 3rd Cavalry was also known as the South Kansas-Texas Regiment. They fought in many battles including Pea Ridge, Corinth, Vicksburg, and Atlanta. General Richard Taylor, commanding the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865 surrendered them.

Herndon came to Texas in 1854 at age fourteen and lived in Waxachie, Ellis County. He was a single farmer when he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home on July 7, 1909 where he died October 3, 1909.
