BENSON, S.H. (1836 ~ 1909). Confederate veteran S.H. Benson was born in 1836 in Alabama.

During the Civil War Benson served in Company G, 20th Alabama Infantry, Pettus' Brigade. E.W. Pettus later became a United States Senator. The 20th fought at Port Gibson and Vicksburg.

The 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery on September 16, 1861. It was surrendered at Salisbury in 1865. The 20th suffered heavy casualties during the War, particularly at Kennesaw and Nashville, according to a history of the unit done at Tarleton Sate University.

Benson moved to Texas in 1865 and lived in Houston, Harris County where he was a member of the Methodist Church. He was a single farmer who suffered from malaria when he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home on July 28, 1908.

He died at the home on September 10, 1909 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.

Benson's biographical information taken from Texas State Cemetery file materials and unit information taken from http://www.tarleton.edu/~KJones/tracy.html.
