CUMMINGS, CHARLES (1834 ~ 1910). Confederate veteran Charles Cummings was born in Massachusetts in 1834. During the Civil War he served in Company A, Waul's Legion. Waul's Legion was organized around Brenham in the summer of 1862 by Thomas Neville Waul.

Waul's Legion saw action in Arkansas and Louisiana in 1862 and was captured after the Union victory at Vicksburg, but was paroled in July 1863. After Waul was promoted, Colonel Barnard Timmons took over command of the legion and it was active around Galveston and the Gulf Coast.

Cummings moved to Texas in 1859, and lived in Detroit, Red River County. It is unclear if he returned to the Detroit area after the Civil War, but he had moved to Austin by 1904.

Cummings was a single mechanic who suffered from rheumatism when he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin on April 12, 1904. He died May 15, 1910 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery along with many other residents of the Home.
