STUART, JOHN C. (1830 ~ 1913). The following is a biography of Confederate veteran John C. Stuart provided by a descendent.

"John C. Stuart, Confederate veteran, was born in Scotland in 1830. The 1910 Census for Travis County, Texas lists his arrival to the United States as 1848. He apparently settled in or around Sparta, Chickasaw County, Mississippi.

At the age of 27, John enlisted in the Mississippi State Militia. On March 23, 1861, he was mustered into Captain Wesley Mellard's Company (Spartan Band) in an unformed regiment of the Mississippi Volunteers. It appears that this company was also called (Old) Company K of Captain William H. Worthington's Company of the 13th Regiment of the Mississippi Volunteers.

On May 13 - 15, 1861, the companies of the 13th Mississippi Volunteers were called to Corinth, where they were enlisted in Confederate service for 12 months. The men were first sent to Tennessee and then ordered to Manassas, where they, including John, participated in the Battle of First Manassas, on July 21, 1861.

After First Manassas, the men were sent to Leesburg, where they took part in the battle on October 22, 1861. According to John's Compiled Military Service Record, this was the last battle he participated. From this point on, he was detailed as a provost guard. By that next year, on April 26, 1862, the 13th regiment was re-organized and the letters of all of the companies were changed. John now served in Company H of the 13th Mississippi Infantry.

After the War's end, John appears to have returned to Mississippi, but eventually moved to Texas in 1847. After settling in Houston, he worked for the rail roads until he was no longer able. On October 10, 1897, he moved to Austin to live in the Confederate Men's Home. He died there on December 15, 1913. He was later buried in the Texas State Cemetery."
