ARMSTRONG, HUGH (1823~1913) Hugh Armstrong, a private in the 22nd Regiment of the Texas Cavalry, was born in Illinois on November 8, 1823. Nothing is known of his early life. There are no military records available on Hugh Armstrong, so we do not know where and when he enlisted. But, he states on his Confederate Pension Application that he served a period of only seven months and a few days. The 22nd Regiment was also called the 1st Indian-Texas Regiment and it was formed by Colonel R.H. Taylor in the spring of 1862 with 873 men. It was part of the Trans-Mississippi Department, and through various campaigns, by May of 1862, it was down to only 335 men. The regiment was included in the surrender on June 2, 1865.
Hugh Armstrong came to Texas in 1849 and lived in Ladonia, Texas. He was a farmer, and in 1899 he was already a widower. On his Confederate Pension Application he stated that he had no other family, and that he was a Baptist. Armstrong was admitted to the Confederate Men‘s Home June 9, 1910, and died April 20, 1913. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the same day.
