ZEITLER, ERNEST (1829-1914) ~ Ernest Zeitler, Confederate veteran, was born in Germany on October 12, 1829. He moved to Texas in 1855.
On September 25, 1861, Zietler enlisted in Captain Jerome B. McCowns Company, 2nd Regiment in Sibley's Brigade of the Texas Mounted Volunteers. He testified on his pension application that during the war, he lost his revolver and his horse was taken by Union forces. He was shot in the right leg near the ankle and taken prisoner at Bayou Teche, Louisiana. There is no record of his parole date.
After the war, Ernest lived in Harris County, Texas where he continued to work as a carpenter for forty-four years. On November 20, 1912, he was admitted to the Confederate Mens Home where he died on May 14, 1914. He is buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
