Wilmer St. John Garwood

GARWOOD, WILMER ST. JOHN (1896~1987) Wilmer St. John Garwood, 90, of Austin, Texas, died Thursday, January 15, 1987. The son of H. M. and Hettie Page Garwood, he was born on December 15, 1896 in Bastrop, Texas. He was married to Ellen Burdine Clayton.

Judge Garwood graduated in 1917 from Georgetown University, Washington, D. C., with a B. A. Degree and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1919. He received a L. L. B. Degree from Harvard University in 1922 and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1923.

Judge Garwood was an attorney with Texaco in New York from 1922 - 1923. He was an attorney with Baker, Botts, Parker and Garwood in Houston from 1924 - 1928. He was counsel for Standard Oil of New Jersey in Buenos Aires from 1929 - 1933. He was an attorney with Andrews, Kelley, Kurth and Campbell in Houston from 1934 - 1947. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Texas in 1948 and served as Associate Justice on the Supreme Court from 1948 - 1958. From 1958 - 1984, he was of counsel to Graves, Dougherty, Hearon and Moody in Austin. He served in the U. S. Army during World War I, and during World War II served in Naval Intelligence as a Lieutenant Commander.

Judge Garwood belonged to numerous professional, social, and civic organizations. He was a founder of St. John's School, Houston and was a trustee of Houston-Tillotson College, Austin. He was a trustee of the University of Texas Law Foundation, a Fellow on the American Bar Foundation and a member of the American Law Institute. He was also a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church, Austin.
