PIPKIN, MAURICE SNOW (1908 ~ 1997). Maurice Snow Pipkin was born March 2, 1908 in San Antonio, Texas to Dabney Phillip and Francis Snow Pipkin.

From 1942 to 1945, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. Pipkin was also a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1951 to 1968.

He practiced law and served as the Executive Director of the Commission on Judicial Conduct. His wife, Theresa Harrison Pipkin, was a school teacher.

Pipkin died December 21, 1997 in Austin, Texas and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.

The following is a copy of 76(R) HR 219 Introduced version - Bill Text passed by the Texas Legislature following Pipkin's death:

"WHEREAS, The passing of the Honorable Maurice S. Pipkin on December 21, 1997, at the age of 89, brought a great loss to the family and many friends of this notable Texan; and

WHEREAS, Born March 2, 1908, in San Antonio, Mr. Pipkin graduated from Main Avenue High School in the Alamo City and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&I in Kingsville; he began his professional career as a teacher and coach in the Brownsville public school system, eventually becoming principal of Brownsville High School; and

WHEREAS, After serving during World War II as a lieutenant in the United States Navy, he returned to the Lone Star State and became the dean of Texas Southmost College Vocational School; Mr. Pipkin was also a practicing attorney in the firm of Wiech, Lewis, and Pipkin in Brownsville and was one of the founding partners of the city's El Centro Grocery Stores; and

WHEREAS, In 1952 this distinguished gentleman was elected to the Texas House of Representatives, ably representing the citizens of Cameron County until his retirement from the legislature in 1968; and

WHEREAS, While a representative, Mr. Pipkin served with distinction as chairman of the Commerce and Manufacturing Committee, as vice chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and as a member of the Banks and Banking Committee, the Judiciary Committee, the House Administration Committee, and the Legislative Budget Board, and he held the post of executive director of the Commission on Judicial Conduct from 1968 to 1984; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Maurice S. Pipkin was widely respected as a man of ability and integrity, and although he will be deeply missed, his spirit and legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all those fortunate enough to have known him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of its former colleague the Honorable Maurice S. Pipkin and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Theresa Harrison Pipkin; to his two sons and daughter-in-law, Gene Pipkin and Stephen Pipkin and his wife Donna; to his four grandchildren, David, Stephen, Stephanie, and Brian Pipkin; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Maurice S. Pipkin."
