SMITH, STANFORD STANLEY (1929 ~ 2003). The following is an obituary for former Texas House Member Stanford Smith. The obituary was published in the San Antonio Express-News.
Stanford S. Smith, 74, of Austin, died Thursday, October 2, 2003. He was born on January 5, 1929 in San Antonio to Stanley Smith and Beatrice Ferguson Smith.
A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Trinity University and St. Mary's Law School in San Antonio. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Texas Legislature, representing Bexar County in the House of Representatives.
Among the pieces of legislation he introduced were the bills that made it illegal to fly an aircraft while under the influence of alcohol and that outlawed obscene literature in Texas. He was a dedicated advocate for industrial development, improved higher education and tourism in the state. He practiced as an attorney in San Antonio.
Stanford's great passions were golf, writing and Texas history. Shortly before his death, he had completed a mystery novel titled 'Murder at the Alamo', and was working on another book. An enthusiastic cook, he especially enjoyed trying new recipes and his specialties included enchiladas, chili and gazpacho.
Stanford is survived by his wife of 28 years, Katherine Smith of Austin; stepson, Stephen Goodwin; stepdaughter, Kathleen Luft and her husband David; son, Benjamin all of Austin; sister, Sylvia Smith of San Antonio and her children, Meredith Hutchinson and Aimee Labriola of Longmont, CO, and Shannon Johnson of St. Paul, MN; brother, Sterling Smith of San Antonio his wife Jo Lynne and their children, Sterling Jr. Smith, Hallie Nikotich and Julie Nelson.
A private Memorial Service will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Austin, with Interment at the Texas State Cemetery.
