GEIGER, RICHARD STUART (1936 ~ 2013). The following is an obituary for Richard Stuart Geiger, former member of the Texas House of Representatives. The obituary was provided by North Dallas Funeral Home.

The Honorable Richard ‘Dick’ Stuart Geiger died October 16, 2013 in his sleep. He was 77 years old. Dick was born February 21, 1936 in Dallas to Gilbert and Letitia Lewis Geiger. He graduated from W. H. Adamson in 1953 and received his Bachelors of Law degree from Southern Methodist University in 1961. Dick was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1962 and the United States Supreme Court in 1968. He married Phyllis Scott McGee on June 4, 1954. Richard served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1973 to 1977. During his two terms in the legislature Richard served on the Committees on State Affairs, Transportation, Public Health, and Elections as well as serving as a delegate to the Texas Constitutional Convention in 1974. Dick joined Thompson Coe Cousins and Irons law firm in 1977 where he became a leader in Insurance law. Richard was a managing partner of Thompson Coe Cousin and Irons and was named by his peers to The Best Lawyers in America® 2012-2014. In the field of Insurance Law, he was also named as a Leading Lawyer in America for 2003-2012 by Chambers and Partner's. He was proud to have received the Raymond Mauk Leadership Award in 2007 Dick made an impact on many people through his various philanthropist activities. He was active with the Adamson Scholarship Foundation. Mr. Geiger was also an active Member of the Board of Directors of Texas Legal Protection Plan in since 1985, a non-profit corporation sponsored by the State Bar of Texas to provide pre-paid legal protection on a group basis where he served as chairman of the Board 2004-2008. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Dallas Zoological Society since 1985, a non-profit corporation providing support for the operation of the Dallas Zoo. Dick also was a member of the Board of Directors of Home Health Services of Texas since 1999, a non-profit corporation providing Medicare Services for eligible participants. He served as chairman of this Board 2007-2013. After moving from Oak Cliff to Turtle Creek he became a member of the Board of Directors of the Turtle Creek Association in 2006, a non-profit corporation providing support and financial assistance to the Turtle Creek neighborhood and parks. Earlier this year he was awarded the Adamson Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Beyond all these professional accolades, Dick was the greatest Papa ever. He was a loving husband, a special father and a compassionate grandfather. Papa taught us many things – he taught us that no matter what, we are family and we might have flaws but we will try to be the best to each other. Many in his industry called him a gentle giant of the insurance industry but we called him our Papa.

The love of his life, Phyllis Scott McGee Geiger preceded him in death August 17, 2012. Papa is survived by his five children and their spouses: Scott and Kathleen Geiger of Waco; Angela Geiger of Lewisville; Margaret Geiger of Duncanville; Claire and Kevin Vale of Champaign Ill and Amy and Frank McCarty of Longview. He had 13 grandchildren: Andrew Allard, John Allard, Elisabeth Allard-Davenport, Richard Stuart Geiger, Audrey Scott Geiger, Richard Lau, Laurence Lau, Cecilia Lau, Grace Walworth, Charles Walworth, Emily McCarty, Rachel McCarty and Ian McCarty. He is also survived by his great grandchild Mason Allard. Dick is survived by his sisters: Theresa Ramsey of Fort Worth; Emalee McRoberts and Susan Lynn Wilbur of Dallas and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 18, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in the Brooks Family Chapel of the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234.

Funeral Service is Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 10:00 am at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, 1302 West Kiest Boulevard, Dallas, Texas 75224. Interment will follow at The Texas State Cemetery, 909 Navasota Street, Austin, Texas 78702 at 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Dallas Zoological Society or Adamson High School Scholarship Foundation, PO Box 765256; Dallas TX 75376-5256.
