Memorial Day Service at State Cemetery

Monday, May 29, Memorial Day, 10:00 AM, at the State Cemetery (909 Navasota Street at East 7th Street,) the Thankful Hubbard Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) the Patrick Henry Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) sponsor the special Memorial Day Service which is held at this time every year. This service was first begun in 1981.

Lt. General Glynn C. Mallory, Jr. will be the keynote speaker. He is a graduate of West Point. LTG Mallory commanded an airborne rifle company in combat, and two years later served as a brigade operations officer in Vietnam. He later served as the Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Army, Deputy Director of Operations in the National Military Command Center on the Joint Staff, and as the Director of Operations, Mobilization, and Readiness on the Army Staff during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.  Highly decorated, his final assignment was as the Commanding General of the Sixth United States Army and the Presidio of San Francisco, California.  He retired at Fort Hood, Texas in October 1995.

Beginning at 9:40 AM, music will be played by the Gary Knippa & The Friends.

The service honors all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service for our country, and especially honors Lt. Robert Rankin and Sgt. Stephen Williams, both of whom fought in the Revolutionary War. (Sgt. Williams also fought in the War of 1812 and the Texas War of Independence.) Descendants of Lt. Rankin and Sgt. Williams will also be in attendance, and will give eulogies of them.

Seating is provided for elderly and mobility impaired people, all others are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Parking is limited inside the Cemetery, but is free and available on Navasota Street, see map below.

The rain plan will have the service in the Texas State Cemetery’s museum, which is entered from Navasota St.
