SILBER, GENEVIEVE PHYLLIS HAYDEN (1924 ~ 2016). The following is an obituary for Genevieve Phyllis Hayden Silber, spouse of former Texas House Member Paul Silber. The obituary was provided by Porter Loring Mortuary of San Antonio.
Genevieve Phyllis Hayden Silber, 91, while embracing her faith joyously left us with a smile early Friday morning to join her beloved husband, Paul. The daughter of Jack Hayden and Trevilla Gallagher was born November 25, 1924 in Titus County, Texas. Known for her friendliness, competitiveness, athletic ability and love of sports, Phyllis graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. As a student at Trinity University in San Antonio, she was active in Choir, Legislative Assembly and Trinity University Players. She was also a member of Pi Kappa Delta, served as both Vice President and President of the Spurs, and was named Who's Who Among Students at American Universities and Colleges. While at Trinity she met and married Lt. Paul G. Silber, Jr. in the Fort Sam Houston Chapel, 25 October 1946 and stuck with him for over 69 years. Upon receiving a degree in Drama and Speech along with a teaching certificate, the couple moved to College Station where she was a Star in the Aggie Players while Paul was finishing his Engineering Degree at A&M.
Upon returning to San Antonio, she helped her husband open their consulting engineering office in 1957. She took an active role in the management of Silber & Associates, serving as CFO until she retired in 1990. Phyllis was a loyal, loving wife and devoted mother. She was an avid reader of history and ancient cultures, an enthusiastic sports fan and eager traveler. As a gifted vocalist, she enjoyed singing in numerous choirs. Phyllis supported the work of the Salvation Army and Mission Road Ministries. She was active in Engineers Auxiliary, Ki-Anns and numerous charities. She shared a keen interest in archaeology with her husband and enjoyed going on many archaeological digs with him. She especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren, her adored pets, traveling abroad and spending time at their ranch. Upon her retirement she was an enthusiastic participant in "Discipleship Unlimited" Bible Study, "Viente Uno" Investment Club and Circle 2 & 4 at Frist Presbyterian Church where she was a member.
Phyllis was known as a woman of intelligence, kindness, beauty and possessed an innate desire to help others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents; brothers, Clyde and Harry Hayden and sister, Louise Wilson. Phyllis is survived and will be greatly missed by her three daughters; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy Daniels and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
A private interment will be held at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 25, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 404 North Alamo.
