ABLE, THOMAS SPOTSWOOD (1844~1926) Thomas Spotswood Able, Confederate veteran, was born in February 1844, in Tennessee, to William and Hettie (Jones) Ables, but grew up in Lincoln County, Tennessee. According to the 1860 census, he had intentions of becoming an "apprentice tanner", but, on April 29, 1861, he joined Company G, First Tennessee Infantry, (Turney's) Provisional Army and served under the command of Albert Sidney Johnston. Able was honorably discharged after 16 months of service for "bad health," following the 7 Days Battle in Richmond, Virginia in 1862.

Following the War, Able moved to Texas in 1869, and was listed as a resident in Marshall, Harrison County, where he worked as a "nurseryman." He later married Emma C. on December 25, 1878, in Houston County. According to family oral history, Emma C. was an Indian girl, born in Houston County in December 1860. By 1880, Able and Emma had moved to Anderson County where he worked as a carpenter. From 1880-1900, the Ables had six children.

On July 8, 1925, Thomas Able was admitted to the Texas Confederate Home. He passed away on March 8, 1926, and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery. Mrs. Able passed away in Fort Worth at St. Joseph Hospital on January 4, 1939. She is not buried with him.
