| | BLACKWELL, JOSIAH H.(1829~1893)Josiah Blackwell was born May 31, 1829 in Lincoln County, Tennessee to George G. and Sarah A. Bedsole Blackwell.
Josiah came to Texas in 1837, at the age of 8, with his parents. His mother, Sarah, was counted in the 1836 – 37 Nacogdoches County Census. Josiah, along with his mother, brother, George W., and sister, Virginia Amanda (Mandy) Blackwell, were recorded as living in La Grange, Fayette County, Texas in 1850. For the next three census reports, 1860 – 1880, Josiah and his family showed up living in Wimberly, Hays County, Texas on the land that his father, George G., received in 1839 as a land grant from the Republic of Texas. In 1854, Josiah received his medical degree from the Medical Gentleman Camp Green. Josiah worked as a circuit-riding doctor traveling around Central Texas. Besides being a doctor, Josiah made all of his own furniture, worked as a blacksmith, and as a cobbler.
At the age of 37, he married Mary F. Rinard and lived on the 640 acres of land that his father had left him in Wimberley, Hays County, Texas. Together, Josiah and Mary had eight children, Malinda Clem, Felix Archoe, Joe Munroe, George Franklin, John Jacob, James, and a set of twins. At the time of the war, Captain J. J. Dix in Lampasas, Texas mustered Josiah into service on April 1, 1862. Josiah served in Company H of the Texas Frontier Regiment of the State Troops and was discharged on February 14, 1863.
Josiah entered the Confederate Men’s Home in Austin, Texas on May 1, 1892 for paralysis, diabetes, and rheumatism and passed away on March 7, 1893.
