HAYWOOD, CHARLES THOMAS (1939-2001) Charles Thomas "Tom" Haywood, State Senator, businessman, and educator, was born September 30, 1939, in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington, got a Master's degree from the University of North Texas and received a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, all in Physics. Haywood settled in as a professor of physics at the University of North Texas and Midwestern State University before becoming the executive director of the North Texas Oil & Gas Association in 1979. He was elected to the Texas Senate in 1994, representing all or parts of 36 counties in District 30. While in the Senate, Haywood was a proponent of a streamlined government, the reform of juvenile justice laws, and reducing the government's role in the regulation of oil and gas. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Pat, for 41 years and had four children and seven grandchildren.
